Uruguay’s manufacturing output rose 7.4% year-on-year in December 2025, after remaining flat in the previous month. Food production made the largest positive contribution, increasing 17.0%, while paper and paper products rose 17.1%. In contrast, chemicals recorded the biggest decline, falling 26.0%. Rubber and plastics dropped 12.4%, and leather products decreased 25.4%. The index of hours worked increased 1.1%, while the number of employed personnel fell 3.1%. For 2025 as a whole, industrial output rose 2.7%.

Uruguay Industry Expands in December

The S&P TSX Composite slipped 0.1% to below 33,250 on Wednesday afternoon, retreating from record territory as a sharp earnings driven selloff in technology outweighed strength in energy and materials. Shopify tumbled over 8%, extending recent losses as investors remained wary of growth prospects and despite upbeat Q1 results, while Constellation Software dropped more 4.5% and CGI fell around 6%. Financials also lost ground, with RBC down 1.2%, TD off 0.8% and BMO shedding 1.3%. In contrast, commodity linked shares provided support as oil recovered above $65 per barrel and gold surged toward $5,100 per ounce. Canadian Natural Resources climbed 3.8%, Suncor gained 2.5% and Cenovus rose 3.3%, while gold miners including Agnico Eagle, Barrick and Wheaton Precious Metals advanced between 1% and 3%.

TSX Falls From Record High

The US government recorded a $94.6 billion budget deficit in January 2026, compared with a $128.6 billion deficit in the same month a year earlier. Receipts rose 9.1% year on year to $559.9 billion, driven by individual income taxes ($317.30 billion), social insurance and retirement receipts ($169.80 billion), and customs duties ($27.74 billion). The increase reflected seasonal and collection timing effects that supported tax and customs receipts in the month. Meanwhile, outlays rose 2.0% year on year to $654.6 billion, with Social Security ($143.55 billion), Health and Medicare ($217.09 billion), and national defense ($70.75 billion) the largest spending categories, while the timing of several payments, including Medicare and veterans’ benefits, influenced the monthly outturn.

US Budget Gap Shrinks in January

The FTSE MIB fell 0.6% to close at 46,511 on Wednesday, pressured by financial stocks. Banca Mediolanum plunged 9.6%, while FinecoBank dropped 9% after reporting flat net profit for 2025. Banca Monte dei Paschi di Siena declined 3% after board member Stefano Di Stefano stepped down amid an insider trading investigation. Intesa Sanpaolo and UniCredit both fell 2.6%. On the upside, Eni gained 1.8% as oil prices rose amid ongoing US-Iran tensions. Enel advanced 1.7%, Ferrari jumped 4%, and STMicroelectronics added 2.9%.
