Uruguay's industrial production fell 3.5% year-on-year in May 2026 after rising 4.0% in the previous month, marking the sharpest decline since October 2025. The contraction was driven primarily by a 4.5% drop in food manufacturing. Other major drags included motor vehicle manufacturing, which fell 41.2%, and chemicals production, down 12.2%. On the upside, paper manufacturing rose 15.0%, beverage production increased 16.9%, and electrical equipment manufacturing climbed 29.1%. Hours worked in the industrial sector declined 6.1% from a year earlier. Industrial employment also weakened, with the occupied personnel index falling 2.1% year-on-year.

Uruguay Industrial Production Contracts in May

The Dow Jones Index decreased 138 points or 0.26 percent on Monday to close at 52499 points. The decline was led by Nvidia (-3.24%), Boeing (-2.94%) and Honeywell International (-2.29%). On the upside, the strongest performers were Salesforce (4.47%), Chevron (3.21%) and Visa (2.28%).

The Dow Jones Index Closes 0.26% Lower

The Ibovespa lost 1.2% to close at 175,739 on Monday following military exchanges between the US and Iran. US and Iranian forces exchanged heavy missile and drone attacks over the weekend and into Monday, pushing oil prices higher on renewed concerns over crude shipments through the Strait of Hormuz. Energy-driven inflation concerns reinforced expectations that interest rates will remain higher for longer. Financials traded lower, with Itaú losing 1.8%, Itaúsa down 2.5%, and Banco do Brasil shedding 1.6%. Utilities also posted losses, with Axia down 3% and Sabesp retreating 2.4%. Vale fell 1.8% on lower iron ore prices. Other notable laggards included WEG (-4.6%), Rede D'Or (-1.3%), and Embraer (-1.9%). In contrast, Petrobras advanced 2.5% on higher oil prices. Meanwhile, the Focus survey showed lower inflation forecasts for 2026.

Ibovespa Slides on Geopolitical Risks

The S&P/TSX Composite Index edged 0.1% lower to close at 35,253 on Monday following military exchanges between the US and Iran. US and Iranian forces exchanged heavy missile and drone attacks over the weekend and into Monday, pushing oil prices higher on renewed concerns over crude shipments through the Strait of Hormuz. Bond yields rose as inflation concerns reinforced expectations that interest rates will remain higher for longer in North America. Financials posted losses, with RBC down 0.3%, Brookfield retreating 0.9%, and CIBC losing 0.6%. Meanwhile, gold prices fell on expectations of a hawkish Fed, weighing on mining stocks. Agnico Eagle lost 2.2%, Barrick shed 2.1%, WPM fell 2%, and Franco-Nevada sank 8.4%. In contrast, energy stocks gained on higher oil prices. Canadian Natural rose 3.1%, Suncor gained 3.5%, and Cenovus added 4.7%. Investors also await the BoC's policy decision on Wednesday, with the central bank widely expected to keep its key interest rate unchanged.
