The Dow Jones Index Closes 0.29% Higher

The Ibovespa shed 0.4% to close at 176,011 on Wednesday following the release of a new election poll and amid escalating tensions in the Middle East. A Genial/Quaest survey showed President Lula leading Flávio Bolsonaro by eight percentage points in a hypothetical second-round runoff. Meanwhile, oil prices rose as the worsening US-Iran conflict continued to fuel concerns over global supply disruptions, reviving inflation worries. Most financial stocks traded lower, with Itaú down 1.1%. Axia lost 4.2% after Goldman Sachs lowered its forecast for the company's adjusted EBITDA, citing the recent decline in energy prices, which is expected to weigh on second-quarter results. Meanwhile, Ambev shed 1.5% despite receiving a "buy" recommendation from BB Investimentos. In contrast, Vale gained 0.7% as iron ore prices edged higher.

Ibovespa Falls as Financial Stocks Weigh

The S&P/TSX Composite Index added 0.3% to close at 35,416 on Wednesday as investors assessed the Bank of Canada's interest rate decision. The BoC kept its key policy rate unchanged at 2.25%, as expected, noting that the economy is showing signs of improvement. The central bank said growth is picking up and inflation is projected to ease gradually from its recent spike. However, it also highlighted significant risks and uncertainties stemming from the conflict in the Middle East and US trade policy. Financials led the gains, with RBC up 1.6%, TD Bank adding 1.4%, BMO advancing 1.3%, and CIBC rising 1.7%. Meanwhile, mining stocks pared earlier gains, with Agnico Eagle down 1.3% and Barrick losing 1.6%. Shopify (-1.8%), Constellation Software (-2%), and Celestica (-2.9%) tracked weakness in US technology stocks. Elsewhere, Cogeco Communications (+1.3%) is set to release its third-quarter results after the market close.

TSX Rises After BoC Holds Rates Steady

US stock indices closed mixed on Wednesday as the S&P 500 (+0.4%) and the Dow (+150) benefited from soft inflation data, while the Nasdaq 100 shed 0.3% amid a selloff in chipmakers. Both headline and core producer prices rose less than expected in June, reinforcing the soft CPI report released a day earlier and further reducing the likelihood of a Fed rate hike at its upcoming meeting. The data helped offset concerns over higher energy prices stemming from the escalating conflict between the US and Iran. Morgan Stanley gained 0.2% after posting upbeat results, joining JPMorgan (+1.1%) and Goldman Sachs (+1.1%) in delivering strong earnings. BlackRock surged 6.6% following its results, while J&J (-2.7%) fell after reporting earnings. Meanwhile, hyperscalers rallied, with Microsoft (+2.8%), Amazon (+3%), and Alphabet (+3.2%) advancing after strong results from ASML (+2.3%). On the other hand, losses among heavyweight memory chipmakers and SpaceX (-0.6%) weighed on the Nasdaq.
