India’s BSE Sensex closed roughly 1% firmer at 79,273 on Tuesday, the highest in over six weeks, driven by earnings optimism and prospects of a resumption of US-Iran talks. The US expressed cautious optimism that peace talks would take place in Pakistan this week, and reports emerged that Tehran was considering joining, as the ceasefire deadline is looming. Heavyweight financials led the way after the Reserve Bank of India partially rolled back early-April curbs introduced when the rupee hit record lows, easing concerns that limits on hedging could hurt bank activity. ICICI Bank advanced 2.4% after solid results and a broker upgrade, and HDFC Bank also gained around 2%.

Sensex Rises to Over 6-Week High

Germany’s 10-year Bund yield steadied just below 3%, lingering near 15-year highs as stubborn inflation concerns kept borrowing costs elevated. Investors remained focused on escalating Middle East tensions and the European Central Bank’s cautious approach, while digesting the latest German investor sentiment data. US President Donald Trump confirmed that the two-week ceasefire between Washington and Tehran will expire on Wednesday evening, with US Vice President JD Vance and an Iranian delegation set to arrive in Pakistan later today for peace talks. Meanwhile, ECB President Christine Lagarde warned of "deeply uncertain" economic prospects, citing energy supply disruptions from the Middle East conflict as a major risk, though she noted that energy prices have yet to escalate to the ECB’s worst-case projections. On the economic data front, Germany’s ZEW economic sentiment plunged to -17.2 in April, its lowest since late 2022, far below expectations of -5, signaling deepening pessimism.

German Bund Yields Hold Near 15-Year Highs Amid Inflation Fears

The SENSEX Index went up by 753 points or 0.96 percent on Tuesday to close at 79273 points. The rise was led by Nestle India (8.36%), Hindustan Unilever (4.15%) and ICICI Bank (2.29%). On the downside, the weakerst performers were Titan Company (-0.64%), Reliance Industries (-0.62%) and NTPC (-0.48%).

The SENSEX Index Closes 0.96% Higher

The South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SACCI) business confidence index fell to 131.3 in March 2026, the lowest since last October, from 134.6 in the prior month, amid soaring energy prices and uncertain trade conditions in the wake of the Middle East conflict. The decline was driven by a weaker, more volatile rand, lower JSE share prices, falling precious metal prices and reduced merchandise import volumes, partly offset by stronger new vehicle sales and increased tourist arrivals over the festive season.
