The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate stood at 6.3% in March 2026, unchanged from the previous two months. It remained the highest jobless rate since February 2021, as the number of unemployed persons rose by 188 month-on-month to 20,381. Meanwhile, the total employment increased by 363, bringing the total to 300,694, while the active labor force among Luxembourg nationals grew by 552, reaching 321,075. In terms of cross-border employment, the number of outgoing resident workers edged down by 1 from a month earlier to 14,045, while the incoming cross-border workers surged by 820 to 234,632. In March 2025, the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was lower at 5.9%.

Luxembourg Jobless Rate Holds Steady at 6.3%

The South African rand weakened slightly toward 16.4 per USD, after touching an over one-month high of 16.3 per USD on April 17, as renewed US–Iran tensions prompted investors to rotate out of riskier assets into the dollar. The United States seized an Iranian cargo vessel it said attempted to breach its blockade, prompting threats of retaliation from Tehran and raising doubts over the durability of the ceasefire. News of the renewed closure of the Strait of Hormuz pushed oil prices higher, reviving inflation concerns and bringing the prospect of further interest-rate hikes back into focus.

South African Rand Edges Down

Eurozone construction output declined by 1.9% year over year in February 2026, following an upwardly revised 4.1% drop in January, marking a second consecutive month of contraction in the sector. Building activity remained the main drag, slipping 8.1%, though the pace of decline eased from 12.9% in the previous month. Output also fell at a softer pace for civil engineering (-1.9% vs -3.8%) and specialized construction activities (-0.1% vs -1.3%). Among major economies, output fell in Germany (-2.5% vs -6.8%), France (-3.5% vs -1.5%) and Spain (-10.2% vs 18.6%), while Italy recorded growth (1.4% vs -0.4%). On a monthly basis, construction output fell by 0.2%, after an upwardly revised 1.3% decrease in the prior month.

Eurozone Construction Output Falls for 2nd Month

Italy’s construction output increased 1.4% year-on-year in February 2026, rebounding from a downwardly revised 0.4% fall in January. On a seasonally adjusted monthly basis, production decreased 0.5%, following a downwardly revised 1.1% drop in the prior month. Over the December 2025–February 2026 period, output fell by an average of 1.1% compared with the previous quarter.
