The Ibovespa fell 1% to close at 183,966 on Thursday, posting broad-based losses after a volatile session amid an unfavorable external environment. US Treasury yields soared to multi-decade highs as expectations of another Fed hike this year increased, while energy-driven inflation concerns persisted. Crude oil and global yields were volatile late in the session, with an upward trend. The BCB’s monetary policy report said the recent oil price shock has not yet generated significant inflationary pass-through through indirect effects on the Brazilian economy, despite direct impacts on prices. The BCB also cut its 2026 GDP growth forecast. Meanwhile, the federal government reduced the amount blocked in the 2026 budget despite concerns over elevated government spending. Financials closed lower, with BB down 2.8%, utilities also fell, with Axia losing 1.6%. Vale fell 1.1% as higher freight costs pressured Brazil’s iron ore exports to Asia. Petrobras lost 0.7% despite higher oil prices.

Ibovespa Falls Amid External Pressures

The Dow Jones Index decreased 162 points or 0.31 percent on Thursday to close at 51350 points. The decline was led by Walmart (-2.67%), IBM (-2.44%) and Sherwin-Williams (-1.90%). On the upside, the strongest performers were Walt Disney (2.03%), Visa (1.79%) and American Express (1.11%).

The S&P/TSX Composite Index edged 0.1% lower to close at 35,706 on Thursday as mining losses and a subdued financial sector weighed on the index. Canada’s 10-year yield reached a three-year high as energy-driven inflation concerns persisted and US Treasury yields soared to multi-decade highs. Crude oil and global yields were volatile late in the session, with an upward trend. Financial stocks traded mostly near flat. Gold prices fell, pressuring mining stocks, with Agnico Eagle down 0.6% and WPM shedding 0.7%. Kinross plunged 11.3% after lowering its production outlook for 2026 and 2027. Meanwhile, energy shares gained on higher oil prices. Retailers rose as estimates showed retail sales likely rebounded in August, marking their strongest gain since January. Tech stocks were mostly higher, with Shopify up 2.4%, tracking Meta’s gains amid their partnership to enable purchases through Meta’s Muse AI agent using Shop Pay. BlackBerry shed 3.9% despite its strong 2Q26 results.

TSX Edges Lower as Mining Stocks Weigh

Paraguay’s Producer Price Index fell 1.7% year over year in August 2025, following a 1.5% decline in July and marking its seventh consecutive annual decrease. By product grouping, both domestic and imported products made negative contributions to the overall result. The decline was mainly driven by negative contributions from domestic agriculture and horticultural products, as well as imported metallic products, machinery and equipment, and food, beverages and tobacco, textiles, and leather products. Other sections, particularly domestic non-metallic transportable goods and other manufactured products, helped mitigate the decline. The PPI was unchanged on a monthly basis, while the cumulative change in the first eight months of the year stood at -0.7%.
