US natural gas prices remained above $2.90/MMBtu, not far from two-month highs, as traders balanced stronger cooling demand and rising LNG exports against plentiful domestic supplies. Persistent heat across the continental US continued to boost air-conditioning demand, supporting gas consumption in the power sector. Meanwhile, average feedgas flows to the nine major LNG export facilities climbed to 18.3 bcfd in early September from 17.2 bcfd in August, as facilities in Texas returned to full operations after maintenance. Export demand also strengthened in Europe and Asia, where buyers are replenishing inventories ahead of the winter heating season amid ongoing disruptions to LNG supplies from the Persian Gulf. However, high domestic production and comfortable storage levels limit further price gains. US gas inventories stood 5.2% above the five-year seasonal average as of August 28, while output across the Lower 48 remained close to record levels, keeping the market well supplied.

US Natgas Prices Hold Near 2-Month High

China’s foreign exchange reserves rose to $3.438 trillion in August 2026, up from $3.419 trillion a month earlier and above market expectations of $3.43 trillion. The increase came as the yuan strengthened 0.5% against the US dollar, while the greenback weakened 0.4% against a basket of major currencies. Meanwhile, the People’s Bank of China extended its gold-buying streak to a 22nd consecutive month, lifting its holdings to 76.73 million fine troy ounces from 76.08 million at the end of July. The value of China’s gold reserves rose to $350.08 billion at the end of August, from $306.35 billion a month earlier.

China’s FX Reserves Rise More than Expected

The Bulgarian economy grew 2.8% year-on-year in the second quarter of 2026, slightly above the preliminary estimate of 2.7% but slowing from a revised 3% in the previous quarter. It marked the weakest pace of expansion since Q1 2024, as domestic consumption growth slowed to 6.2% from 7.6% in Q1. Household consumption eased to 7.6% from 8.6%, while government spending fell 2.7% after rising 2.2% in Q1. Gross fixed capital formation also moderated to 8.4% from 8.7%. Net external demand made a positive contribution to GDP growth, as exports of goods and services rebounded to 0.2% after falling 7.1% in Q1, while imports edged up to 8.5% from 8.2% previously. On a seasonally quarterly basis, the economy expanded 0.7% in Q2, slightly above the preliminary estimate of 0.6% and unchanged from the previous quarter.

Bulgaria Q2 GDP Revised Slightly Higher

Crude oil fluctuated above $91 a barrel on Monday after surging 9.7% last week, as escalating tensions between Washington and Tehran raised fears of prolonged disruptions to energy shipments through the Strait of Hormuz. The US said it had struck three Iranian oil tankers over the weekend, destroying one, in retaliation for ballistic missile attacks on US Navy warships. Iran responded by threatening to establish a new restricted zone outside the strait, reportedly extending from the US Navy blockade line into parts of the Persian Gulf. Tehran also claimed to have targeted three tankers, although the reports could not be independently confirmed. US Energy Secretary Chris Wright said Washington would maintain its naval presence and blockade, aimed at limiting Iranian oil exports while supporting the safe passage of commercial vessels. Wright previously said that millions of barrels of crude were still moving through the Strait of Hormuz despite the escalating conflict.
