Italy Construction Output YoY

Germany’s 10-year Bund yield ended the week around 3.5%, down from a peak of 3.57% on Tuesday, the highest level since June 2009, and posting its first weekly decline since early August. The retreat came as traders scaled back expectations for further ECB rate hikes, despite a more restrictive tone from the Federal Reserve that could reinforce global tightening expectations. Some analysts argued that markets had gone too far in pricing ECB hikes, noting that higher energy prices could weigh on growth and ultimately dampen inflationary pressures. Also, Brent crude fell for a third consecutive session as concerns over Saudi supply disruptions eased, offering some relief on the inflation front. Money markets now price the ECB deposit rate at just below 2.9% by December, implying roughly a 50% chance of a second hike this year. By November 2027, rates are priced at 3.39%, down from 3.55% on Monday.

Bund Yields Fall as Traders Scale Back ECB Rate-Hike Bets

European stocks were slightly lower on Friday, with both the STOXX 50 and the STOXX 600 falling 0.1%, pausing after gains in the previous two sessions, as traders ended a week packed with monetary policy decisions on a cautious note. The Bank of Japan raised interest rates to a 31-year high, as expected. However, two policymakers dissented and voted to keep rates unchanged, raising concerns among investors about whether the central bank will be able to sustain its tightening cycle. Meanwhile, oil prices extended their decline. Energy, insurance and auto shares were in the red, while technology stocks outperformed. Shell fell 1.2%, Nestle declined 1%, and Allianz lost 1.3%. Orange tumbled nearly 4%, making it the worst performer on the STOXX 600. On the other hand, ASML Holding gained 2.1% and STMicroelectronics rose 2.2%, ranking among the index's top performers. On the week, the STOXX 50 is little changed while the STOXX 600 is up 0.5%.

European Stocks Cautious

The FTSE 100 Index is dropping 33 points. Leading the losses are Airtel Africa (-4.94%), Coca-Cola (-4.08%) and BT (-3.12%). Top gainers were Fresnillo (2.63%), Endeavour (2.40%) and Antofagasta (1.76%).

The FTSE 100 Index Opens 0.31% Lower

The DAX Index is losing 79 points. Losses were led by Deutsche Telekom (-3.46%), Zalando (-1.93%) and Mercedes-Benz AG (-1.40%). Offsetting the fall, top gainers were Infineon (3.13%), Siemens (0.66%) and Siemens Energy (0.52%).
