The Dow Jones Index is picking up 95 points or 0.19 percent on Monday. Gains are led by Chevron (1.51%), Merck (1.40%) and 3M (1.05%). Biggest losers are Nike (-2.56%), P&G (-1.84%) and Microsoft (-1.28%).

Belarus’s annual inflation rate remained unchanged at 5.4% in April 2026, halting a four-month disinflation trend. Price growth slowed for food products (6.3% vs 7.8% in March) and non-food goods (2.0% vs 2.2%), while inflation for services accelerated sharply to 8.4% from 6.0%. On a monthly basis, consumer prices rose 0.8% in April, following a 0.6% increase in the previous month.

Belarus Inflation Holds Steady in April

The S&P/TSX Composite Index gained 0.5% on Monday, lifted by strong gains in the mining sector. Barrick Mining surged more than 8% after beating estimates for first-quarter profit as higher gold prices offset lower production. Peers Agnico Eagle (+2.5%) and Wheaton Precious Metals (+3.5%) also advanced. Meanwhile, oil prices rose on renewed supply concerns after US President Donald Trump rejected Iran’s response to a proposed peace agreement. Energy producers traded higher, with Canadian Natural and Suncor Energy both gaining more than 1%. In contrast, elevated energy costs maintained fears of global stagflation, pressuring banking stocks. Royal Bank of Canada fell 0.5%, while TD Bank edged lower. Elsewhere, Doman Building Materials gained more than 4.5% despite reporting first-quarter revenue below expectations.

Silver soared over 6% to $85.5 an ounce on Monday, rebounding from early losses to hit its highest level in nearly two months as investors monitored US-Iran negotiations. President Donald Trump dismissed Iran’s peace proposal as “totally unacceptable,” heightening the risk of renewed conflict, while weekend attacks in the Middle East threatened a fragile April ceasefire. With diplomatic efforts stalled, the Strait of Hormuz remains blocked, keeping oil prices high and fueling inflation concerns. Expectations for two US rate cuts this year have faded, with forecasts now split between limited easing and no cuts in 2026. Markets also focused on Tuesday’s US CPI data and Trump’s upcoming China visit, where he will meet President Xi Jinping to discuss Iran, Taiwan, AI, and nuclear weapons.
