Corn futures fell below $5.2 per bushel, easing from a three-year high as traders took profits following the recent rally. Still, concerns over US yields and potential export demand continued to support prices. The latest USDA report showed the corn crop holding at 57% good-to-excellent as of August 30, while recent field assessments pointed to mixed and, in some areas, lower-than-expected yields, raising doubts over the size of this year’s harvest. Meanwhile, Chinese officials are reportedly discussing purchases of US agricultural products, including corn, ahead of a potential Trump-Xi meeting. Global supply concerns also persist, with the EU forecasting its 2026 maize harvest at nearly a 20-year low, while disruptions to Black Sea grain shipments remain a risk to exports. Ahead of the USDA’s weekly export sales report, traders expect US old-crop corn sales of up to 200,000 metric tons and new-crop sales of as much as 1.6 million tons, keeping attention on overseas demand.

Corn Futures Fall on Profit-Taking

The Nikkei 225 Index rose 0.4% to above 64,500 while the broader Topix Index climbed 1.2% to 4,130 on Thursday, recouping some losses from the previous session and tracking gains on Wall Street overnight as a pullback in global bond yields provided some relief. Oil prices also halted their rally after President Donald Trump said the latest attacks on Iran would be short-lived, easing inflation concerns. Meanwhile, traders kept a close watch on the yen after it rallied sharply amid speculation of a rate check and possible intervention by authorities. A stronger yen weighs on the earnings outlook for Japan’s export-heavy industries and makes domestic assets more expensive for foreign investors. Financial stocks led the rebound, with notable gains from Mitsubishi UFJ (2.6%), Sumitomo Mitsui (2.7%) and Mizuho Financial (2.3%).

Japanese Shares Track Wall Street Higher

Singapore stocks rose 36 points, or 0.6%, to a record high of 5,780 around noon on Thursday, extending gains from the previous session and tracking a rally on Wall Street overnight, buoyed by heavyweight tech stocks. The latest data also lifted sentiment, after a private survey showed Singapore’s private sector continued to grow solidly in August. Non-energy minerals, transportation, producer manufacturing, and finance mainly supported the broader index. However, traders anticipated the release of July retail sales data on Friday, after retail sales accelerated in June. Rising oil prices capped the gains amid heightened inflation concerns and reinforced expectations of an interest rate hike amid escalating Middle East tensions. Among the top gainers were DFI Retail Group (3.4%), Hong Kong Land (2.8%), Yangzijiang Shipbuilding (1.7%), DBS Group (1.3%), and OCBC (1.2%).

STI Hits Record High, Tracks Wall Street Rally

Indonesian shares rose 49 points, or 0.7%, to 6,644 on Thursday, rebounding from the prior muted session and touching their highest level in 3-1/2 months. Sentiment improved after a partial rebound on Wall Street overnight, with traders bargain-hunting in sectors hit by recent risk-off selling. Locally, Destry Damayanti was sworn in as governor of Bank Indonesia on Wednesday, becoming the first woman to lead the central bank. In her confirmation hearing, she pledged to keep policy responsive to economic challenges while promoting stability and supporting growth. However, gains were capped by concerns that headline and core inflation could climb further in coming months, driven by higher input and logistics costs, rebounding energy prices, and potential El Niño-related food supply disruptions. All sectors advanced, led by basic materials, non-cyclicals, and energy. Early standouts included Charoen Pokphand (7.6%), Adaro Andalan (4.0%), Bukit Asam (3.7%), and Medco Energi (2.1%).
