Ireland’s gross domestic product fell by 2% quarter-on-quarter in the first quarter of 2026, following a 3.8% decline in the previous quarter, according to preliminary estimates. This marks the second consecutive quarter of economic contraction, driven largely by a downturn in the multinational-dominated industrial sector. On an annual basis, the economy plunged by 6% in Q1, reaching its lowest level since Q4 2023 and reversing a 2.2% gain in the preceding quarter.

Irish GDP Contracts 2% in Q1

Total credit extended to the Greek economy increased by 4.4% year-on-year in March 2026, following a more than one-year low of 4.2% in the previous month. Credit to the private sector edged up to 7.6% from 7.4% in February. The monthly net flow of financing to the private sector stood at a positive €2,387 million, compared with €1,264 million a month earlier. Moreover, credit to the general government fell by 0.8% in March, easing from a 1.0% decline previously. The monthly net flow of financing to the general government turned positive at €1,137 million, compared with -€2,950 million in the prior month.

Deutsche Bank plunged over 2% as its results failed to impress investors. Hannover Ruck and Munchener Ruck were also among the top losers, falling 3% and 2.7%, respectively. On the upside, Adidas surged roughly 7% after reporting a stronger-than-expected first-quarter profit. Mercedes-Benz Group added 0.3%, after issuing an optimistic full-year outlook and reporting a smaller-than-expected profit decline.
