The Dow Jones Index went up by 51 points or 0.10 percent on Friday to close at 49503 points. The rise was led by Nike (3.18%), UnitedHealth (3.16%) and Walt Disney (3.00%). On the downside, the weakerst performers were Visa (-3.08%), Apple (-2.27%) and Nvidia (-2.21%).

The Ibovespa fell 0.8% to close at 186,293 on Friday, as profit taking in heavyweights and persistent pressure in financials outweighed relief from softer US inflation and lower domestic rates. Vale dropped 2.8% after its 4Q25 results and weaker iron ore prices, while Banco do Brasil slid 2.3% and BB Seguridade plunged 9.6%, leading losses across the banking complex. Petrobras was broadly flat despite crude gains, as US sanctions relief for Venezuela reinforced expectations of ample global supply. The January US CPI came below the expectations, easing Treasury yields and pushing Brazilian DI rates lower. Retail sales are projected to post a ninth consecutive annual increase in 2025, albeit remaining below 2024 levels. The Ibovespa will resume trading on February 18th after the Carnival holiday.

Ibovespa Closes the Week in the Red

The S&P/TSX Composite surged 1.9% to close at 33,074 on Friday, securing a weekly gain of 1.9% as softer-than-expected US inflation improved risk appetite and buoyed rate-sensitive and commodity-linked shares. January US CPI slowed to 2.4%, easing pressure on Treasury yields and the dollar, while gold rebounded from the prior session’s selloff, lifting miners including Agnico Eagle (5.5%) and Barrick Gold (5.6%). Energy stocks lagged, however, as softer crude prices and rising supply tempered momentum within the sector, partially offsetting strength in materials. Elsewhere, Magna surged 18.9%, adding momentum to industrials after posting upbeat quarterly results. Air Canada advanced 3.7% after issuing an upbeat 2026 core-profit outlook, adding support to industrial and travel-related names. Despite the bounce, the index remains below recent highs as investors weigh the Fed’s policy path and the durability of global growth.

TSX Closes Week Strong

The S&P 500 and the DOw were little changed on Friday, while the Nasdaq Composite added 0.2%, leaving the major averages around 1.5% lower for the week, as a softer-than-expected January inflation report failed to revive risk appetite amid persistent AI-related volatility. The headline inflation and core inflation rates eased as expected, maintaining market bets that the Federal Reserve will cut rates multiple times this year. Chipmakers and megacap tech names including Nvidia (-2.2%), Apple (-2.3%), Alphabet (-1.1%), Meta (-1.6%), and Broadcom (-1.8%) remained under pressure amid renewed scrutiny over the sustainability of datacenter capital expenditure, keeping a lid on broader gains. Software names such as Salesforce (2.3%) and Oracle (2.3%) advanced, while Applied Materials (8.1%) and Arista Networks (4.8%) surged after upbeat earnings.
