The yield on the US 10-year Treasury traded slightly higher at 4.01% on Thursday, its first increase in three sessions, though it remained near April lows. Investors awaited fresh catalysts while monitoring US–China trade tensions and the ongoing federal government shutdown, which continues to delay the release of key economic data. The Philadelphia Fed Manufacturing Index unexpectedly fell to a six-month low. On the monetary policy front, markets continued to price in a 96% probability of a 25 basis point rate cut by the Fed at the end of the month, with bets on a similar move in December rising to 91%. Federal Reserve Governor Christopher Waller said policymakers could continue lowering rates in quarter-point increments to support a weakening labor market, while Stephen Miran reiterated his call for a larger reduction. Earlier in the week, Fed Chair Powell warned of mounting risks to employment, another indication that the central bank is likely to continue easing borrowing costs.

Treasury Yields Little Changed

The S&P/TSX Composite rose around 0.3% to above the 30,700 mark for the first time on Thursday, supported by strong gains in tech and a continued rally among major mining equities as investors monitored escalating trade tensions between the US and China. Celestica was the top performer, adding nearly 5% on strong demand for AI infrastructure after Goldman Sachs initiated coverage with a Buy rating and a $340 target citing the company’s ability to scale for hyperscale data centers. Shopify added over 3%, benefiting from upgraded analyst targets and renewed optimism around merchant growth and AI-enhanced tools. Agnico Eagle, Barrick Mining, and Franco-Nevada outperformed, adding between about 1% and 2.5% as gold prices continued to test new highs. Meanwhile, US officials on Wednesday criticized China’s tighter rare-earth export controls and warned of potential countermeasures, a development that kept risk-aware traders cautious.

TSX Poised to Set Record High

US stocks advanced on Thursday, with the S&P 500 and Dow Jones each up 0.2%, while the Nasdaq Composite gained 0.6%. The move followed a volatile session the day before, as investors focused on corporate earnings and the AI rally regained momentum after Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing raised its revenue-growth target. Communication services, technology, and utilities led the gains, while financials underperformed. Meanwhile, investors continued to look past rising US–China trade tensions and the ongoing federal government shutdown, which has delayed the release of key economic data.
