Moody’s Ratings downgraded Botswana’s long-term domestic- and foreign-currency issuer ratings to Baa1 from A3, maintaining a negative outlook. The downgrade reflects challenges in adjusting to a structural downturn in the diamond industry, which accounts for about 30% of GDP and 90% of goods exports, leading to economic contraction, weaker external buffers, and rising debt. Since April 2025, the global diamond slump has persisted, and the sector remains difficult to replace as an engine of growth and foreign exchange earnings. Moody’s expects the government to gradually implement coordinated policies, with debt peaking around 40% of GDP, though external and domestic risks remain. With government financial assets nearly depleted, Botswana is increasingly vulnerable to higher interest rates and further debt pressures.

S&P Global downgraded France’s ratings to ‘A+’ from ‘AA-’, citing concerns that budgetary consolidation will proceed more slowly than expected without significant additional deficit-reducing measures. Despite the downgrade, S&P revised France’s outlook to ‘stable’ from ‘negative’, reflecting a more balanced view of the country’s fiscal trajectory. The agency noted that rising government debt and weak political consensus on the pace of consolidation weigh on France’s credit profile. At the same time, France’s underlying credit strengths, including its economic size, institutional framework, and ability to manage debt, provide support. The downgrade signals that while France faces fiscal challenges, its overall financial stability remains intact. Investors may view the stable outlook as a sign that risks are contained in the near term.

In New York,  the Dow Jones Index gained 238 points or 0.52 percent on Friday. Gains were led by American Express (7.21%), Apple (2.04%) and Visa (1.95%). Biggest losers were Caterpillar (-2.48%), Goldman Sachs (-0.98%) and Salesforce (-0.87%).
