The S&P Global Flash Australia Services PMI Business Activity Index rose to 53.1 in October from 52.4 in September, indicating faster expansion in the service sector. The improvement was driven by higher new business inflows, though growth in new orders and employment slowed compared with previous months. Export demand for services strengthened, helping to offset manufacturing weakness and stabilise overall new export business. Business confidence among service providers fell to an 11-month low as optimism over future output growth waned amid concerns about competition and the broader economic outlook. On the cost side, input price inflation eased to its lowest in nearly a year, while selling price inflation fell to a five-year low as firms faced limited capacity to raise charges due to strong market competition.

The S&P Global Flash Australia Composite PMI rose to 52.6 in October, up from 52.4 in September, still signaling continued expansion for a thirteenth but with a clear sector split as services accelerated while manufacturing contracted. Services activity strengthened with the Services Business Activity Index at 53.1 versus 52.4, whereas the Manufacturing PMI fell to 49.7 from 51.4, goods new orders declined at the fastest pace so far this year and manufacturing export orders weakened while services exports helped stabilise overall new export business. Business confidence slid to an 11-month low, employment continued to increase for a tenth consecutive month driven by service-sector hiring which helped firms clear backlogs for a sixth month, input cost inflation eased to near a one-year low even as manufacturing input prices rose at the quickest rate since April, and selling price inflation fell to its softest pace in around five years.

Australia Private Sector Expands for 13th Month

The Ibovespa rose 0.6% to close at 145,721 on Thursday, advancing for a second straight session supported by easing external risk and strong gains in the energy sector. The White House announcement that President Trump will meet President Xi next week reduced bilateral trade fears, supporting risk assets. Meanwhile, banks advanced after JPMorgan said it expects a solid, though not exceptional, third quarter for the sector. The bank noted that agribusiness loans remain a challenge, particularly for Banco do Brasil, while non-performing loans and risk costs may rise slightly but stay at healthy levels. Loan growth has exceeded expectations so far in 2025, though a slowdown is likely in the third quarter. Higher oil prices lifted Petrobras by 0.5%. Mega-cap WEG added 3.5% continuing to lead the index higher after a strong third quarter on Wednesday.
