The Fed's meeting comes amid challenges, including a legal dispute over its leadership and US President Donald Trump's efforts to sway monetary policy. On the data front, reports on retail sales and industrial production, due later today, will be scrutinized for further insights into the strength of the economy.

Gold Steady Near Record High

India’s Commerce Ministry will soon release a list of 100 imported products—including chemicals and plastics—in a bid to boost domestic production, The Economic Times reported. The move comes against the backdrop of reciprocal tariffs imposed on Indian goods by the United States and aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ongoing push to promote Swadeshi (indigenous) products. Sunil Barthwal, Secretary in the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, said on Monday that these products have been identified to reduce import dependence through capacity building or better utilization of existing manufacturing facilities. “Our endeavour is to identify these products and put them in the public domain so that manufacturers—both current and prospective—can explore opportunities. This will give a boost to the Make in India initiative,” Barthwal said, adding that the list will be published by the end of the month or in October.

Dollar Steadies Ahead of Fed Meeting

China on Monday criticized a U.S. proposal urging allies, including the EU and G7, to impose tariffs of 50% to 100% on Chinese goods in response to Beijing’s purchases of Russian oil. Calling the move “a typical act of unilateral bullying and economic coercion,” the commerce ministry said it violated prior consensus between Chinese and U.S. leaders and risked destabilizing global trade and supply chains. It warned that “if any action harms China’s interests, China will take all necessary steps to protect its lawful rights and interests,” though it did not specify retaliatory measures. Despite the sharp rebuke, Beijing emphasized its preference to resolve trade and economic disputes with Washington through “dialogue and consultation based on equality.”
