The annual inflation rate in Estonia advanced to 4.1% in October 2024, accelerating from a three-month low of 3% in the previous month. It marked the highest inflation rate since February, as prices increased mainly for food & non-alcoholic beverages (5.8% vs 4.6% in September), housing (0.4% vs 0.1%), household goods (3.8% vs 2.6%), transport (0.4% vs -2.6%), communication (9.4% vs 7.7%), recreation & entertainment (6.3% vs 5%), hotels, cafes & restaurants (6.1% vs 4.7%), miscellaneous goods and services (8.7% vs 8.3%). Additionally, costs declined less for clothing & footwear (-1% vs -2.1%). Meanwhile, inflation slowed for alcohol & tobacco (5.8% vs 6.3%) and health (6.9% vs 7.3%). On a monthly basis, consumer prices rose by 0.6%, shifting from a 0.3% drop in the preceding period.

Estonian Inflation Rate at 8-Month High

Gross foreign exchange reserves in South Africa dropped to $63.028 billion in October 2024, from September’s record high of $63.633 billion. Decreases were observed in SDRs ($6.310 billion vs $6.427 billion in September) and foreign currency reserves ($45.515 billion vs $46.551 billion). On the other hand, gold reserves rose ($11.203 vs $10.655 billion). Additionally, the forward position, which represents the central bank’s unsettled or swap transactions, edged up to $0.538 billion in October from $0.534 billion in the previous month.

South Africa Forex Reserves Fall in October

The BSE Sensex slumped 908 points, or 1.1%, to 79,449 in morning deals on Thursday, halting gains from the previous session amid caution ahead of the Fed’s interest rate decision later today. Traders continued to assess the impact of Trump’s victory in the US presidential election on global inflation due to concerns about tariff policies. Investors were also closely monitoring the ongoing National People’s Congress while digesting fresh Chinese trade data. Exports grew the most since July 2022, while imports fell more than expected, highlighting further weak domestic demand in the mainland. The Nifty 50 plunged 1.2% to below 24,200, mainly weighed down by the pharmaceuticals, metals, consumer durables, auto, and tech sectors, with notable losses from Hindalco (-7.7%) after its unit Novelis reported an 18% plunge in net income. Other early losers included Adani Enterprises (-2.5%), Grasim (-2.5%), and Tech Mahindra (-2.4%).
